A tribute to Beryl Proctor
We were sad to learn that Beryl Proctor, Past President (1969-71) died this week.
Beryl was an outstanding runner in the 1950s and early 1960s. Her best time of 57.7sec for 400m set in 1959 still ranks in the club top 30.
She was one of our early cinder track stars at the Croydon Arena, which had opened in 1953.
Beryl won the Surrey quarter mile title in 1956. and represented the county Surrey in the Southern Inter Counties match placing 4th.
She had another interesting claim, that husband was never beyond the range of her encouraging call during cross-country races of “Come on Brieeeeeerrrrn!”.
Beryl last attended a club function, the unveiling of plaque to the club’s previous one lap record holder Cis Wright, together with Donna Fraser and active Harriers and dignitaries at the South Norwood Leisure Centre in 2014.
We extend our sympathy to her family.
